The United States has imposed a plastic ban
In 2020, the U.S. state of New Jersey passed a law banning single-use plastic bags. Starting May 4, 2022, all retailers and food service businesses across the state will be prohibited from using or distributing single-use plastic bags. The law was passed on November 4, 2020, and has several stages of implementation. Businesses found violating the ban will be warned for the first violation, fined up to $1,000 per day for the second and $5,000 per day for the third. The legislation is described locally as "the toughest plastic ban in the United States". In Manhattan, not far from New Jersey, a similar ban went into effect in 2020.
